Chin surgery / Genioplasty
The balance of ones face is determined by the relative size and projection of each of its parts, the upper forehead, the middle nose and upper jaw and the lower third, the lower jaw and chin. Each has a relation and effect on the others.
Where the chin is less prominent than is ideal, the rest of the face is thrown out of balance to a degree. The nose appears more prominent as does the forehead to a lesser extent. Even where the chin itself may not be recognised by a patient as ‘weak’, they may comment upon the poor definition of the jaw line, the loss of the angle between the jaw and the neck, or upon the prominence of the nose. Genioplasty involves an alteration of the shape and/or position of the chin. In experienced hands it is a procedure that is less problematic in the long term than chin implants, although these too have their place.
The procedure is performed using an incision on the inside of the mouth and the bony chin is repositioned and held with small screws. It can be done as a day stay procedure or may be combined with other surgery such as blepharoplasty or face lift.
A weak or overly prominent chin can significantly alter the proportions of your face. A genioplasty alters the size and prominence of your chin. A personalised consultation with A/Prof Gianoutsos will provide you with an experienced and careful assessment of your concerns and the appropriate approach to achieve your desired result.
A/Prof Gianoutsos will do your procedure under general anaesthesia with one of the expert and experienced specialist anaesthetists with whom he works on a regular basis.
A genioplasty can be done with an implant, but more frequently A/Prof Gianoutsos will undertake a bony genioplasty where the bone of the chin is repositioned via an incision the mouth.
The procedure may be combined with a rhinoplasty.
At the end of the operation, A/Prof Gianoutsos will place contoured taping around your jaw and chin. A cool pack will help to minimize bruising and swelling.
Although the operation can be done as a day only procedure most patients stay in overnight, this is also the case where brow lift is combined with other procedures.
After discharge you will be seen at A/Prof Gianoutsos’ rooms the following week to check your incision lines and your progress.
You will then be reviewed at around 6 weeks and then six and twelve months.
A/Prof Gianoutsos and his staff are available at any time, however, should you have any queries or concerns.
You should minimize physical activity for the first 72 hours. You need to use regular mouthwashes and take care cleaning your lower teeth.
Depending upon the extent of your procedure, you will need around two weeks out of your normal circulation.
You should avoid very stressful physical exertion for 4 weeks.
Although you will see changes straight away, it is around 3 to 4 weeks that you will see your result.
All surgery carries at least some degree of risk. These are minimized by ensuring you are as healthy as possible and prepared for the operation, by selecting a properly qualified and experienced surgeon and allowing yourself a proper recovery period. The particular risks as well as the expected perioperative course will be discussed in detail with you at your consultation and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions.
